Leaflog at HWCH

Hi everyone!

As I'm sure you know, Hard Working Class Heroes is happening again all around Dublin on 6/7/8th of October. There are many exciting Irish acts playing this year including Owensie, Squarehead, Toby Kaar and We are Losers. Top of my list to see this year are Tralee lads, Leaflog. I posted about Leaflog before and I'm really excited that they're coming back to Dublin.

 

Leaflog are an ambient instrumental band taking influence from Godspeed, Sigur Ros and Mogwai. These guys are really something, they remind me of one of my favourite bands, Unwed Sailor. They've only been around a short while but they've had some really exciting stuff happen for them recently. The title track from their EP 'Mayday' was chosen for The Irish Blood Transfusion's Board campaign for World Blood Donor Day and they were commissioned to compose the score for Bill Morrison's experimental film 'Decasia', which they also performed live at the 2010 Kerry Film Festival.

They're playing Saturday, 10:15pm, 8th October in the Grand Social, Lower Liffey Street. I can't wait and I'm going to drag all my friends along with me!

Ten Past Seven: Help fund their new record

Ten Past Seven want to record new music and hope you will help them out! In case you haven't heard of them, they're an independent experimental/math rock band from Co. Kerry, Ireland. They've been making music for 9 years including, 2 EPs, an album and a split 7 inch. They've toured all over Ireland and the UK and supported bands such as Lightning Bolt, Dj Scotch Egg, Pelican, Deerhoof and Zu.

They're planning to record the new EP this summer at Black Box Studios, France with Spud (Guerrilla Sounds) and Dave Odlum and release it on Outonalimb Records. The target is €5,000 and there's only 32 days left! Really exciting stuff...

Hello!

I'm dying to start a new band. Sort of a dreamy, surfy 60s garage rock kinda thing, influences would be The Beach Boys, The Vivian Girls, La Sera, Beach House, The Dum Dum Girls, The Belles, The Cramps, The Sonics and any other 60s garage rock bands really.

Yeah, so I'm writing some songs at the moment and I'm going to have 2 vintage organs once I move house so I'll probably be playing those and singing. I have someone who might be playing guitar, but it's not definite. I'd definitely be open to co-writing stuff too so, If anyone in Dublin wants to get involved mail me at the address below. If you can sing too that'd be amazing as harmonies rule.

Meljoann

I can't stop listening to Meljoann at the moment! I first came across her music on Nialler9's blog and I absolutely love her tracks. It's completely different to anything coming out of Ireland right now, this girl is seriously talented. Her music is an innovative mish-mash of slick R&B female vocals, electro, digital funk and Skweee. Very cool indeed. Her releases to date are the 'Tour Guide' EP, 'So Academic' single and album 'Squick'. Some really sweet tracks on these. Meljoann has previously collaborated with Herv on his Gang Moulded release and now the pair are working on a new project Gland and Conduit with plans to release the album in the near future. Can't wait to hear that! x

Korg MS-20

 

I'm looking to buy a Korg MS20 at the moment. The only ones I've seen for sale on ebay have been from the U.S. and the shipping is too expensive on top of a pretty pricey synth already. I've tried adverts.ie and buyandsell but nothing as of yet. Hoping to find one in Ireland or maybe the UK that doesn't need any work done on it or very little. Please let me know if you hear of anyone thinking of selling one! Also, if anyone is selling any other vintage analog synths of similar calibre I'd be interested in having a look. Thank you! x

Hooray for Humans

Hello! I'm beyond excited about playing gigs again with Hooray for Humans. We've been taking a step back from things for the last few months but we're getting up and running again and I'm delighted! We've loads of work to get done on the album, which will hopefully be released in the new year and we're working hard to get new songs ready for gigs. So anyway, we're playing the Roisin Dubh, Galway on Dec 16th with the lovely Squarehead and then The Quad, Cork on Dec 17th. Both gigs are Christmas parties for the venue and free gigs, so they should be lots of fun. Come along and say Hi! Here's the poster I made for the Cork gig. ATP! ( I hope)

I've been looking forward to going to ATP for so long and it's finally here! This Friday a massive group of us are heading over to Minehead for Nightmare Before Christmas, curated by Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The line-up is amazing, the people we're going with are even more amazing, but I'm so worried that the airport is going to be shut due to the weather! It's closed today until 7pm because of heavy snowfall over the airport, so it's not unreasonable to expect it to be closed on Friday morning when we're due to fly. We're looking at a whole array of alternatives at the moment such as getting a ferry and then a series of buses. Flights from other airports are ridiculously expensive and would also involve paying for trains/buses to those airports. This a total nightmare! I'm going to try and stay positive and focus on the actual festival and hope that the weather will clear in time.

Here's the full line-up. I'm most looking forward to seeing Godspeed (obviously), Neurosis (I'd say they'll put on a spectacular show), Weird Al (just amazing), The Ex, Wolves in the Throne Room, Nomeansno (monkeysmonkeysmonkeys), I've seen both Deerhoof and Oneida in the last year but would really like to see them again, especially Oneida as I hear: "members of Godspeed, Deerhoof, The Dead C, Flower/Corsano Duo, Hallogallo, The Sadies, White Hills will join Oneida to improvise". Tasty. Well, it's clearly a savage line-up, as long as we're there to experience it!

The lovely Sí will be playing the Kevin Barry Room in the National Concert Hall, Dublin this Sunday 24th October. This gig is going to be really special. Chipophone = COOLEST THING IN THE WORLD

This is the greatest thing I've ever seen. Swedish software engineer Linus Åkesson took an old electric organ off his friend's hands and decided to reverse-engineer it, transforming it into the Chipophone. Truly amazing. I want, no I NEED one of these. Make me one Linus, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease? Check out Linus' page for a full rundown on everything he did for this project.
